CONFLICT PREVENTION

A Local Social Covenant towards PREVENTING CONFLICT

Preamble
United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), representing local and regional governments worldwide, together with civil society and global partners, acknowledges the growing challenges of conflict, polarization, and social instability as threats to democracy, equity, and sustainable development. Local and regional governments play a central role in promoting peace and democracy, addressing systemic violence, and fostering trust among communities.
Guided by the principles of care, equality, and intergenerational responsibility, UCLG promotes local conflict prevention as a foundation for peace, coexistence and prosperity.
This endeavour leverages the expertise and leadership of local governments, the insights of civil society, and the active participation of communities to co-create solutions that uphold the prevention of conflicts within our communities by promoting equality, human rights and local public service provision–especially in areas where neighbours suffer the consequences of national wars and conflicts firsthand. Our Local Social Covenant places local conflict prevention as a pre-condition of a renewed global agenda for justice and sustainability for current and future generations.
